Select GIPS schools go into secure mode Wednesday
(Grand Island, NE) - Wednesday, at 2:45 pm, a concerned citizen notified School Resource Officers (SROs) that an individual was near the area of the school and appeared to be carrying a weapon. The safety of students and staff is our first concern. We take all potential threats of this nature seriously.
Once spotted, we contacted local emergency response officials. We ordered that Grand Island Senior High, Barr Middle School, Walnut Middle School, and Westridge Middle School implement secure mode. With support from the Grand Island Police Department (GIPD), the suspect was detained and was in custody with the GIPD by 3:10 pm.
GIPS would like to thank the campus SROs on staff here at Grand Island Senior High. This is the system working and we are grateful for their service and dedication to student and staff safety.
